In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul instructs the church in Corinth that women should be silent in church. In another verse, Paul tells his protege Timothy that a woman shouldn’t teach a man.

If you’ve ever run into those passages and felt the room get a little smaller … you’re not alone.

Those texts have shaped centuries of debate over what women can and can’t do in the church. But zoom out to the entire arc of Scripture, and you’ll find women leading, prophesying, teaching, pastoring.

A different picture starts to emerge.

At our next Midweek Bible Lecture, Forrest Jenan will lead us in looking at those hard passages and asking what the whole of Scripture actually says about women in the church. We’ll walk through the texts, the history, the context, and the theology behind why we believe women and men are equally called to lead, teach, and pastor.
